Decorating Fabric Techniques - leaflet for Textiles
I produced this leaflet a few years ago for an interview on ‘Decorating Fabric Techniques’. I thought it may be useful to share. I have also uploaded the editable version on publisher.
I have also uploaded the presenation which I created however, it is very basic. Along with the fabric properties/senses/ keywords starter activity. I printed these A5 landscape on card double sided. I then put them into an envelope with the labelled fabric swatches.

Apron Design - Cover Lesson - Textiles
A great visual resource to support a simple design task for a double cover lesson. The task can be completed on the double sided word document which is also attached. There are some research questions on the front to get the students thinking about ideas. *please note our students are allowed to use their phones for research tasks. Some questions may not work without access to the Internet, so you may want to amend it.
On the front there is a simple apron template for them to draw their design into. As an extension students could annotate their design with how it could be manufactured. Or they could go on to design an accompanying oven glove or tea towel?
This task is aimed at Year 7 textiles, however it can be used for a RM or food lesson.
Smart Materials - Textiles Do it Now Task
A simple quick starter / do it now task to test/widen students current knowledge of Smart Materials
Learning Outcomes of the lesson:
MEET IT (Learning) I can name at least 4 different smart materials
BEAT IT (Mastering) I can identify smart materials in real-life products
SMASH IT (Extending) I can explain how smart materials can be used in every day products
Students could then go onto designing a product for the textile industry which includes a smart material.

KS3 DT Textiles Design Cover Lesson
This is a one off cover lesson for KS3 DT Textiles aimed at Year 8 or 9. Please note that our students are allowed to use their phones to conduct research during lessons, which they will use to support questions 1-9. Students are tasked with designing a football kit for the world cup 2022 in Qatar (design a male/female kit).
Lesson Objectives:
• To be able to conduct a piece of research about a major event.
• To be able to identify ‘care label’ instructions and recommend appropriate ones for an item of clothing.
• To develop a sporting kit and explain all decisions made.
There is also a very simple power-point which shows the Qatar logo in colour (resource printed in black/white to save money). As well as some basic information on care labels etc. I will update and jazz up the powerpoint when I get time and I will update this when it is done.
Possible extension tasks could be to then design the shorts, socks a drawstring kit bag etc. Or an extension sheet on care labels?

Sonia Delaunay Mini Project KS3 Textiles Booklet
For Sept 2021-22 I have a split class at DT whereby I will be seeing Year 7 only once a fortnight on the rotation.
***Adding the PowerPoints as extra as I make them.
I have been tasked with running a mini textiles project over 6-8 lessons focusing on the techniques hand embroidery and applique.
Inspired by Sonia Delaunay’s use of colour and shape, students are going to design and make a textile greeting card. They will be given a brown kraft A6 card and envelope along with a piece of white cotton/felt. They will then use a range of coloured felt, batik, bondaweb and hand embroidery stitches to make a textile composition to decorate the front of their card.
This mini booklet is larger than it needs to be however I can set a few tasks for homework etc.
The second page is blank and that is for the marking grid.
The booklet includes a range of tasks:
Sonia Delaunay Fact File
Design Brief
Mood Board - Homework
Product Analysis
Specification and Designing
Applique and Hand Embroidery (Extension Task)
Evaluation

Unit 1 - Hospitality & Catering EXAM
Honestly these are nothing amazing but I thought I would share.
To support students with the Unit 1 exam H&C I have been creating mini mock exam papers (lifted from past papers) to test knowledge. They’re great for a lengthy starter activity or for use in a double theory lesson. Then using the answer presentation the students peer assess each others papers and write the marks on the front.
I then test again a few weeks later and share the paper via google classroom. I’ve found it’s a good way to monitor progress and introduce them to exam style questions.
When printing, print double sided but flip the edge of the second page (otherwise it’s upside down) and fold in half.
